Koeman fails his first Real test as a Barcelona coach

Barcelona lost to Real Madrid today in the El Clasico despite being favorites going into the match. The loss is not even the most upsetting part, it was the manner in which we lost.

Barcelona had not lost in the league since Nov 13, 2018, against Real Betis and the last thing any Barcelona fan expected was losing at Camp Nou against a struggling Madrid side.

This was Koeman’s first real test and he failed woefully.

The Dutch coach did a lot of experimenting in what is his most important game since taking over as Barcelona’s Head coach.

  1. Coutinho starts on the left after shining repeatedly in the no-10 role in matches prior to this match
  2. Pedri starts on the right-wing after impressing down the middle against Getafe and having a nice cameo on the left against Ferencvarosi.

Messi who should have been rested in the last game couldn’t do much to help the team when he was needed. Our captain is fatigued and he plays 90 minutes in every game.

After obviously getting it all wrong, Koeman waited until the 82nd minute to make his substitutions. Does that remind you of Valverde? Yeah, me too.

Just like he did against Getafe, he made a couple of desperate substitutions towards the ending, bringing on Dembele for Busquets and Braithwaite for Alba as if having more attackers would mean we will score goals. Of course, that backfired and we conceded one more just like against Getafe where we almost conceded a second.

Koeman has a chance to redeem himself against Juventus and for his sake, he better gets it right.
