English pundit slams Southgate for snubbing Bukayo Saka
Former England cricketer Darren Gough has queried Gareth Southgate’s decision not to call-up Arsenal rising star Bukayo Saka for the UEFA Nations League matches this month in which the Three Lions played against Iceland and Denmark.
Gough believes that the Arsenal starlet who was nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award would have been a useful addition to the squad due to his versatility and being left-footed.
The talkSPORT pundit was surprised by Saka exclusion from the squad with Southgate knowing that he planned to play a 3-4-3 system.
While Nigerians who of course want Bukayo Saka to represent Nigeria were thrilled by Southgate’s decision to overlook Saka. The Nigeria Football Federation are still trying to convince the winger to switch his international allegiance from England to Nigeria.
If the promising winger had played in any of the UEFA Nations League matches in September, he would have been cap-tied to his country of birth.
“It was surprising. We talked about many players, we heard about Saka, what a season he had, he could have played in that position, he’s another player,” Gough said on talkSPORT.
“He’s played at left-back, he’s played at left wing-back, he’s played everywhere and he had a fantastic season.”
I hope Bukayo Saka choose to represent Nigeria as he would have a better chance of winning an International trophy with Nigeria as England are yet to win a major trophy since 1966.
