What exactly is the FIFA’s The Best Men’s Player of the Year award?
The 3-man shortlist for FIFA’s The Best Men’s Player of the Year award and rather comically Lionel Messi was excluded from the ‘not-so-prestigious’ award.
This award was inaugurated in 2016 after FIFA and France Football decided to no longer work together to produce the FIFA Ballon d’Or prize. Quite frankly the award still has a questionable reputation since that inauguration as the award still fails to truly go to the player that has been most impressive.
Before I even break anything down, feel free to conclude that I’m saying this because I’m a Barcelona fan.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let me talk about plausible criteria that could be used to select an award meant to go to the best player all season:
1. Best individual performance over the course of the season
2. Most trophies won over the course of the season
3. Major trophy won over the course of the season
4. Who we want to give our award
Now let me proceed to compare Messi with the other players on this shortlist.
1. Best individual performance over the course of the season: It feels weird trying to even talk about this as Messi obviously outplayed everyone on this list.
This is a player that was the major piece in a team that lost only one match throughout the league and 3 matches in total.
Barcelona lost Neymar and his replacement Dembele battled with injury, which means Messi was left with the fluctuating Suarez and he dragged Barcelona almost all by himself.
He scored more goals, created more goals, completed more take-ons, passes etc than any of the 3 players on the list.
While all these three players obviously had a great season last time out; they can’t compare to Messi statistically.
2. Most trophies won over the course of the season:
Ronaldo – Club World Cup, Champions league
Modric – Club World Cup, Champions league,
Messi – La Liga, Copa del Rey
Won’t even waste time on this
3. Major trophy won over the course of the season:
Ronaldo – Champions league
Modric – Champions league
4. Who we want to give our award:
This seems to be the most impressive criteria for FIFA since they ignored their World Cup winners off the list and went with UEFA’s list, talk about losing credibility. If you know you can’t handle an award; please don’t bother.
In conclusion, say what you may Messi is deserving of being on this list and other than Modric, no one else is deserving of that award
But by all means… tell me I’m wrong😀
