Angel Di Maria has reached out to Atletico Madrid manager several times to offer his services, according to Spanish newspaper AS.
The Manchester United flop has had two successful seasons at Parc des Princes, but appears to be angling for a move back to the Spanish capital where he enjoyed the best form of his career with Real Madrid between 2010 and 2014.
Atletico boss Simeone is on the lookout for a new creative star this summer and Di Maria is keen to make sure he is front of mind. As a former Argentina international, Simeone may appreciate linking up with one of his country’s prominent stars.
The 30-year-old has been modestly successful in Ligue 1 and made 39 appearances for PSG last season. However, he started just one Champions League match as Unai Emery opted for an attacking trio of Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani and Neymar.
With that front three likely to play an even more important role under Thomas Tuchel, Di Maria may find himself surplus to requirements at PSG next season, making a summer exit all the more likely.
He remains an important player for Argentina’s national squad and has a chance to catch Simeone’s eye at the World Cup. The South American side are among the favourites to win the tournament in Russia and face Croatia, Iceland and Nigeria in the group phase.
PSG paid £44.3million to sign Di Maria from Manchester United two summers ago, which represented a £20m loss for the Premier League side following their British record deal to sign him from Real Madrid in 2014.
The winger struggled to settle in northern England and fell out of favour under Louis van Gaal. His situation was made all the more worse after an attempted burglary at his home left his young family traumatised.
Atletico Madrid are unlikely to pay anything close to the figure PSG paid for him, but their transfer budget will be boosted if Antoine Griezmann joins Barcelona. The French striker is expected to complete an £88m move to the Nou Camp this summer.
