‘I’m totally focused on Sunderland’ ~ Defoe insists West Ham interest was one way
Jermain Defoe insists his head was never turned by West Ham’s January interest and is solely focused on helping Sunderland avoid relegation from the Premier League.
The Black Cats are currently at the foot of the Premier League table having lost 15 of their 24 top-flight fixtures so far this term, though Defoe’s 14 goals have given David Moyes’ side hope of survival.
Defoe was the centre of interest from his former club West Ham during the January window as Slaven Bilic looked to add strength to his attacking unit, though the 34-year-old insists he was not tempted to return to the capital.
“I’m totally focused on scoring goals [for Sunderland],” Defoe told talkSPORT. “I’m totally focused on helping this football club stay in the Premier League.
“For me, that’s the best way to approach it so I’m not distracted. I’ll just keep my head down and work hard.”
Defoe did admit, however, that the interest was flattering and that he was pleased that his goalscoring exploits were worthy of such praise.
“Even with the speculation about West Ham, it’s always nice when you’re wanted. But the end of the day, I’ve been a part of this game for a long time and that’s part and parcel of it now.
“It was easy for me to see it and just think, ‘Okay, that’s nice people want me, but I’ve got to be focused on Sunderland’.”
